How the numbers are worked out
- Volume in cubic feet = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12.
- Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Bulk mulch is usually sold by the cubic yard.
- Bags = cubic feet ÷ bag size, rounded up. Bags are commonly 2 or 3 cubic feet; check the label.
- The extra allowance (default 10%) covers uneven ground, settling and trimming around plants.
Tips
- A depth of about 2 to 3 inches is the usual target for beds. Thicker layers can hold too much moisture and smother roots.
- Keep mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and the stems of woody plants.
- Measure irregular beds by splitting them into rectangles and adding the results, or use the total-area mode.
- Wood mulch breaks down. Plan to top up an inch or so every year or two rather than piling on a thick layer.
Frequently asked questions
How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it equals 13.5 bags of 2 cubic feet or 9 bags of 3 cubic feet. Bulk delivery is usually cheaper per yard than bags once you need more than a few yards.
How deep should mulch be?
Around 2 to 3 inches for most garden beds. Use less over fine seedlings and keep it clear of stems and trunks.
How much does a cubic yard of mulch cover?
At a depth of 3 inches, one cubic yard covers roughly 108 square feet. At 2 inches it covers about 162 square feet.
