How the numbers are worked out
- Area in square feet = length × width, or enter the total area directly.
- Pavers = area ÷ area of one paver, plus a waste allowance for cuts and breakage (default 10%), rounded up.
- Base gravel and bedding sand are calculated as area × depth ÷ 12 ÷ 27 cubic yards. Typical depths are 4 inches for the base and 1 inch for sand.
- Joint spacing is ignored; for most patios the difference is small compared with the waste allowance.
Tips
- Patterns with many angles, such as herringbone at the edges or curves, need a bigger waste allowance. Use 15% or more.
- Buy a few extra pavers for future repairs; colors vary between batches.
- Driveways and areas with vehicles need a deeper base than patios and walkways. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and local guidance.
- Plan drainage so water runs away from the house, with a slight slope across the surface.
Frequently asked questions
How many 12x12 pavers do I need for 100 square feet?
A 12 by 12 inch paver covers 1 square foot, so you need 100 pavers plus a waste allowance. With 10% extra, that is 110 pavers.
How deep should the base be under pavers?
A common figure for patios and walkways is about 4 inches of compacted gravel base with 1 inch of bedding sand. Driveways need a deeper base. Check the paver manufacturer's guidance for your climate and use.
How much waste should I allow?
About 10% for simple layouts and 15% or more for diagonal patterns, curves and lots of cuts.
