Calculator

Gravel calculator

Enter the length, width and depth of your path, driveway or garden bed. The calculator returns cubic yards and an estimate in tons, which is how most suppliers sell gravel.

How the numbers are worked out

  • Volume in cubic feet = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12, then ÷ 27 for cubic yards.
  • Tons = cubic yards × density. The default of 1.4 tons per cubic yard is a typical figure for common gravel and crushed stone.
  • The real density depends on the stone type, size and moisture (roughly 1.2 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard), so ask your supplier for theirs.
  • The extra allowance (default 10%) covers compaction and uneven ground.

Tips

  • Paths and garden beds usually need 2 to 3 inches of gravel. Driveways need a deeper, compacted base, often 4 to 6 inches or more.
  • Lay landscape fabric or a compacted base first to keep gravel from sinking into the soil.
  • Edging keeps gravel from migrating onto lawn and borders.
  • Gravel is sold in many sizes and colors. Look at a sample on site before ordering a full load.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet does a ton of gravel cover?

At a depth of 2 inches and a density of 1.4 tons per cubic yard, a ton covers about 115 square feet. At 3 inches it covers about 77 square feet. Use the calculator to adjust for your own depth and material.

How do I convert cubic yards of gravel to tons?

Multiply cubic yards by the material's density in tons per cubic yard. 1.4 is a common default, but the exact value varies, so check with your supplier.

Should I order extra?

A little. Gravel compacts and ground is rarely perfectly level. The default 10% allowance is a reasonable starting point for most small projects.
